Margaret Walker Alexander Library Art Installation

In 2024, much of my creative energy was diverted to a wonderful direction. I had the privilege of participating in a project in my “own back yard,” so to speak. Libraries are place of refuge, welcome, knowledge, and community connection. The Margaret Walker Alexander Library is a small branch located at a busy intersection in West Jackson. For a few years on my grocery commute I’d daydream about a mural on the large, white cinder block facade of the building. Little did I know that individuals from the Jackson Friends of the Library were at work, applying for a grant for exactly for the purpose of creating art in libraries throughout Jackson. This allowed for the perfect opportunity to advocate that these funds be appropriated to the small but mighty branch. Alli Smith, a good friend and talented artist, headed up the project as the main designer and coordinator. What came next was an amazing process of collaboration. I am incredibly grateful to have gotten to be a part of the research, visioning, and execution of the three art installations in the space as well as leading some of the workshops that allowed for community engagement that was a vital part of this project.

The Sacred Marker

Eastertide Art Collaboration

Eastertide is a season of the liturgical church calendar. It marks the 50 days after Easter up to Pentecost Sunday. My current and past church experience has not included a celebration of this season. A group of artists through Redeemer Community Arts, a group I help run at my church, wanted to explore the idea of a longer, sustained focus on the resurrection, time spent with his disciples, and ascension of Jesus and the pouring out of the Holy Spirit. We participated in a retreat where we started a series of collaborative art pieces that we completed in the months afterwards. I am grateful to Claire Howell, Bailey Hughes, and Jacob Rowan for embarking on this project together.  The Things That Make for Peace Kateri Gill & Jacob Rowan Mixed media on paper Children of the Day Kateri Gill & Bailey Hughes Mixed media on paper Subsume Kateri Gill, Bailey Hughes, and Jacob Rowan Mixed media on paper Breath of Life Bailey Hughes & Jacob Rowan Mixed media on paper Transc...
